My hypothesis is the answer is in the logs. Consider checking the database logs and see if what happens.
GadgetGuru: YMMV, but in practice — Zigbee works great in my case.

Quick note: Zigbee routing no longer works in version 2024.6. Switch to Zigbee2MQTT now.
